The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] will convene a nurse’s seminar under the theme “Accelerate transformation of nurses’ fraternity to advance primary health care”. The seminar will be convened in Johannesburg on the 13th and 14th November 2018.

The aim of the seminar is to look at the conditions within which nurses work under as primary caregivers, the role of nurses in the roll-out of the National Health Insurance [NHI] at the critical point of medical care and the transformation of the nursing fraternity. We will also zoom into the closure of vacancies in key sites of the delivery of public services such as hospitals and clinics where the already under-staffed nursing cadre is forced to do the work of the cleaners and porters in addition to their already huge responsibilities that they have to perform.

On the 2nd day of the seminar we will outline a clear programme of action which will contribute to the transformation of the health sector as part of the more radical phase of our transition. The following are the goals we want to achieve by convening this seminar:

·       to draft social compact for nurses

·       to develop an implementation plan which will focus on how the nursing profession will enable changes in health outcomes

·       improving the quality of healthcare with special focus on training, management and development of nurses

·       improve working conditions and ensure that we adequately respond to service delivery requirements

The Minister of Health, COSATU President, World Health Organisation [WHO] and the South African Nursing Council [SANC] will be addressing the seminar including other distinguished guests.

The nurses’ seminar will be followed by a historical launch of our 1st Edition of Nurses Magazine to be held in Johannesburg on the 15th November 2018.
