He was addressing journalists in Pretoria today, on President Thabo Mbeki's participation in the 58th session of the United Nations General Assembly in the US and Deputy President Jacob Zuma's visit to the Netherlands and Spain, this week.
He said government believed there were other factors that contributed to terrorism and root causes thereof ought to be eradicated.
“If there is poverty, lack of democracy, lack of the rule of law and lack of accountability - then the potential for the recruitment of terrorists is much greater,” he said.
He added that there was a need for a holistic approach “which could include the usage of military force as part of the overall objective of dealing with terrorism”.
The global fight against terrorism is expected to feature high on the agenda alongside other issues such as multilateralism, the restructuring of the UN and Nepad. President Mbeki will address the General Debate of the UNGA on issues of international, regional and national significance. –BuaNews.
