Title: Mufamadi: Death of CEO of National House of Traditional Leaders
Press statement by Minister Mufamadi, on the untimely death of Mr Malungisa Gobe, the CEO of the National House of Traditional Leaders
3 March 2005
It is with great shock and regret that the Ministry and the Department of Provincial and Local Government learnt about the untimely death of the Chief Executive Officer of the National House of Traditional Leaders, Mr Malungisa Gobe.
Mr Gobe worked as the Secretary of the National House of Traditional Leaders from December 2002 until March 2005, when he untimely died in the car accident in Zimbabwe executing the duties of the institution of traditional leadership.
Mr Gobe’s main duties included presiding over the daily activities of the National House of Traditional Leaders and represent the institution of traditional leadership in stakeholders’ forums. His passing away yesterday happened in that dedicated sacrifice as he visited Zimbabwe as part of the delegation from various Houses of Traditional Leaders of South Africa headed by Inkosi Mpiyezintombi Mzimela, to assess land resettlement land policy amongst other assignments.
Mr Gobe’s death takes place at the time when government and the institution of traditional leadership is working hard to restore the dignity of the institution whose credibility has been destroyed by successive colonial and apartheid regimes.
It happens at a crucial time for the National House of Traditional Leaders, when his leadership and input is needed to help facilitate the finalisation of provincial specific pieces of legislation to make sure that the institution’s dignity is finally restored. And that it occupies its rightful place in society.
Mr Gobe’s untimely death takes place when the Commission on the Resolution of Traditional Leadership Claims and Disputes was arranging a meeting with the National House to pave way for future interaction with traditional leaders and communities. The Commission is preparing to undertake its work in earnest and partnerships with all relevant stakeholders is important for it in order to complete its work.
On behalf of the South African government, the Department and the Ministry for Provincial and Local Government, and on my own behalf, I would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to the National House of Traditional Leaders and to Mr Gobe’s family.
