Title: L Mti: International Women's Day
COMMISSIONER LINDA MTI ON THE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY, 8 March 2004
Today, 8 March 2004, the Department of Correctional Services, joins South Africa and the rest of the World in commemorating one of the most significant days on the international calendar, the International Women's Day. This day is marked by progressive groups around the world and at the United Nations as an occasion for celebration of significant victories women of the world have earned in their struggles for equality, justice, peace and development.
As a department transforming towards centring rehabilitation as our core business, we draw encouragement and strength from this. Through the proven abilities, sacrifices and commitment of women of our country, we know that no challenge is beyond them. This holds true for our own initiative aimed at 'gearing our department for rehabilitation' as a strategy against crime and criminality.
We urge the women of our country to prevail in society and lead the drive to reconstitute families as nurseries of good behaviour and primary agents of correction. We urge them to ensure that the social compact against crime, for rehabilitation is realized in the tenth year of freedom for our country. To have all the women in Correctional Services playing a leading role in this regard is fitting.
As the department, we salute all the women on this day and also pay homage to their resilience and strength of character. While the revolutionary project for the liberation of women is an international one, the women of South Africa warrant a specific mention. Their struggle not only helped release them from the throes of an oppressive political, social and economic regime, but has also helped return South Africa from international wilderness and located our country firmly in the world system. This feat is deserving of appreciation.
As the Department of Correctional Services, our commitment to the cause of our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, wives and daughters remain unequivocal. We join them as partners in the popular battle cry of `Wathint' abafazi, wathint' imbokodo.
