Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has criticised "cadres" who speak out of turn, SABC radio news reported on Wednesday.

"There's no revolutionary movement that can ever win any war... if its cadres are ill-disciplined," Mthethwa said at Freedom Day celebrations in New Castle.

"Cadres must know when to speak and when not to speak and especially when the president of the African National Congress (ANC) has spoken, nobody is allowed to speak thereafter."

This was something that needed to be "instilled in young people", Mthethwa added.

ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema is facing a disciplinary hearing after attacking President Jacob Zuma in public, who had rebuked Malema.

The youth leader landed in the hot water for openly supporting Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF party and for singing "shoot the boer" despite a court interdict preventing him from doing so.
