Ladies and Gentlemen
As we close the 2005 academic year, I am indeed honoured to present to you, with the fruits of Gauteng's 2005 Matric class. On behalf of the Premier, the Gauteng government our most sincere gratitude to our educators, school leadership under the different school principals, our government officials, non-governmental partners involved in education, business partners and more important, the flowers of the nation our learners. In releasing the 2005 Matric results to you, I am also grateful and heartened by the confidence shown by parents in public education and the support and guidance they continue to provide to our institutions and learners through their participations in the various school governing bodies they participate in. Thanks also to the various private institutions which continue to write our public system examinations, confirming our held belief that indeed our examinations are of highest standard, well run and managed and simply of world standard.
While in the year 2005 we experienced a decline of 1,8% in the overall provincial results. The 2005 Matric Results for Gauteng stands at 74, 9% as compared to last year's 76.7%. Despite this disappointment we are excited by the improvements we made again around key education quality areas. We have again improved in quality matters such as universal access to education, gender equity, performance in gateway subjects, more and more learners sitting for higher grade subjects and also more of them getting matric endorsements.
In terms of improving universal access to education, the progress we boldly make is confirmed by the continuous increase in the number of learners sitting for matric exams. The 2005 Matric Examination was written by 136 882 learners as compared to 130 966 in 2004 and 8,58% increase between the years 2004 and 2005. The system has put through an increasingly larger number of learners from one year to the next. This indicates that our policies that promote access to education are indeed yielding dividends. The doors of learning and teaching are indeed continuously opening
Premier again in the 2005 matric class we are witnessing more learners passing with a matric endorsement, increasing from 15774 in 2004 to 16114 in 2005 meaning that candidates passing with endorsement increased from 53,03% in 2004 to 54,69% in 2005.
It is noteworthy that learners in the province produced a total of 11 509 distinctions in 2005. The number of distinctions has increased by 1 025 from 10 484 in 2004 meaning that there was a 9.78% increase in that area too.
In terms of empowerment for the girl child, Premier we are very proud that our girls this year not only performed very well but just excelled. I don't want to reveal too much at this stage, the head of department will later tell us who are these two wonderful learners who today amongst the others gathered today who also made us proud who led the pack by being the top learner for the class of 2005 and the other for leading the pack in the maths and science, scoring 400 over 400 in both maths and science, simply getting 100% in both subjects. To top it all, some school from some town in the province, gave us the best results in the province, guess what the very school is a girls only school. Well our girls are taking their rightful place in society as equals with their male counterparts.
* The number of girls entered for Physical Science Higher Grade in 2005 increased by 277, or 2, 72%. But the gap in terms of number of girl learners and boy learners enrolled for Physical Science Higher Grade in 2005 widened in favour of the latter. 8,64% of the girl learners obtained distinctions in Physical Science whereas 7,51% boy learners did likewise.
* The number of girl learners entered for Physical Science Standard Grade in 2005 increased by 1907, or 22,35%. The gap in terms of enrolment between girl and boy learners was narrower in 2005 than was the case in 2004. 0,33% of girl learners obtained distinctions in Physical Science Standard Grade, whereas 0,30 of boys achieved the same feat.
* The number of girls entered for Biology Higher Grade in 2005 increased by 415, or 4,86% *The number of girls entered for Biology Standard Grade in 2005 increased by 1634, or 12,05%
* There were more girl learners than boy learners entered for both Biology Higher and Standard Grade in 2005 *The total number of girls entered for both Mathematics Higher Grade and Standard Grade in 2005 was 26 437, whereas boy learners numbered 23 813.
* The number of girl learners enrolled for Mathematics Higher Grade in 2005 took a slight decline by 144 candidates, or 3,17%. However, the gap in terms of number of entries between boy and girl learners actually more than doubled in 2005 by 108,86% in favour of the former. Notwithstanding this observation, the proportion of girl learners who obtained A symbols in 2005 was 13,38% as opposed to 12,74% for the boys. In other words, the girl learners performed better than the boy learners in this regard.
* The number of girl learners entered for Mathematics Standard Grade in 2005 increased by 2 756, or 14,29%. This means that the gap between boy learners and girl learners in 2005 increased by 33,82% in favour of the latter. 3 755 of the girl learners obtained A symbols in 2005

Premier there is a good number of schools in the Province that continues to make us very very proud. This year 59 schools produced 100% pass, and not just passes but quality results with very good symbols. 158 schools had passes between 90% and 99%. This amazing performance does indeed confirm that our children education is indeed in a very good state of health. For that we are proud and continue to be indebted to those educators who gave their all to their learners and thus strengthening our country and its people. Thanks again.
Ladies and Gentlemen kindly join me in congratulating our top 10 schools that performed extremely well calculated according to percentage passed, number of learners passed, number of learners passed with endorsement
