Planting a tree is surely the strongest demonstration of hope and faith in the future. This tree-planting ceremony bears the same symbolism - to demonstrate government's belief in the future role and services of the college in the road safety scenario within our province and in the country at large. Thomas Fuller, an author, once observed that 'He who plants trees loves others besides himself'. Indeed, today's ceremony is symbolic of our government's policy of striving to create a caring society - caring for all our fellow citizens.

Observing a 25-year old tree, one wonders who planted the tree, what difficulties it had to endure and ultimately what the future of the tree over the next 25 years will hold. Similarly the eventful first twenty-five years of Boekenhoutkloof Traffic Training College has seen the evolution of an institution that has won recognition for its traffic training service quality and committed staff. Considering its list of accomplishments, the college can clearly look back with pride over twenty-five years of exceptional achievements in training leadership.

Boekenhoutkloof Traffic Training College has developed into an outstanding academic institution that meets the needs of the South African public and private infrastructure users. The major contributors to this success story are all the employees of the college - past and present. They have provided an invaluable service to Gauteng communities - a service which is greatly appreciated by the Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works.

In life, temporary things such as short-term popularity and fame are minor considerations. While one must always do one's best, there is no reason to be disappointed if there are no apparent immediate results. The traffic training service delivery of Boekenhoutkloof points to this. Over the college's years of development, growth and success might not have been immediate, but year-by-year it has delivered continuously and, in so doing has become a stronger institute.

During a time where the demand for traffic safety and traffic management is scrutinised, the staff and learners of the college have contributed with sterling service. The traffic training quality at Boekenhoutkloof is evidence of a career calling which is characterised by commitment and loyalty. Looking back, the staff forms the history of the centre. It is hoped that numerous, noteworthy achievements of the past will serve to inspire greater advances and heights of achievement in the future. I also hope that Boekenhoutkloof Traffic Training College, as a centre of excellence in rendering top quality training services, will retain its leading position.

The college's reputation as a centre of excellence is a cause for pride. From humble beginnings, the college matured with a rich history renowned for high standards in traffic training, many of which have been firsts for South Africa. May the college's distinguished history provide current and future staff and learners of Boekenhoutkloof Traffic Training College with the motivation and strength to continue working steadfastly towards excellence in traffic training and traffic safety. On behalf of the people of Gauteng, it is my wish that the centre should continuously develop while upholding its training service quality and building bonds of trust, friendship and fellowship.

I trust that in 25 years, when the trees we are today planting have grown and when those who care to look at them and wonder as to who planted them, the reputation of this college will still be there to testify on the glorious service of this institution so that today's symbolic action will be thought of alongside self-sacrificing dedication to our human society.

I thank you all.
