Justice Moseneke succeeds Justice Pius Langa who assumes the position of Chief Justice and replaces the long serving former Chief Justice Arthur Chaskalson.
Justice Moseneke's appointment follows the President's consultation with the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) and the National Assembly.
After having interviewed Mr Justice Moseneke, the JSC conveyed its support to the President on his appointment.
The President also recognised the contribution of the outgoing Justice Chaskalson, in laying the foundations for a constitutional democracy by setting up the Constitutional Court.
Mr Mbeki thanked him for his role in the transformation process in the country's legal system.
"The President pointed to the challenges facing the incoming leadership of the court, Chief Justice Pius Langa and Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke, in speeding up the transformation of the judiciary in particular and the legal fraternity in general," said Spokesperson Bheki Khumalo.
He said government and Parliament were planning a formal ceremony to bid Justice Chaskalson farewell and to usher in the new leadership of the judiciary.
President Mbeki also confirmed the appointment of the following High Court judges; Mr Cagney John Musi for the Free State, Deputy Judge President Sibusiso Jali for Natal Provincial Division, Deputy Judge President Sharmaine Renuka Balton for the Transvaal Provincial Division.
Mr Xola Mlungisi Petse was appointed to the Transkei Division. - BuaNews
