Title: Molefe: Moral Regeneration Movement preparatory meeting

MESSAGE OF SUPPORT DELIVERED ON BEHALF OF THE PREMIER OF THE NORTH WEST, DR POPO SIMON MOLEFE, ON THE OCCASION OF THE MORAL REGENERATION MOVEMENT PREPARATORY MEETING, 25 October 2003

The Honourable Premier of the North West Province, Dr Popo Simon Molefe, sends his best wishes to this important gathering of civil society organisations in our province.

This meeting draws significance from the fact that it brings together representatives from various stakeholders in pursuit of the noble objective of restoring the moral fibre of our society.

The common thread that unites all those gathered here today is the need to instil in our society, values compatible with the new democratic and prosperous South Africa we seek to build.

We have a collective responsibility to transform our society from the perceived state of moral decay and degeneration into a society that is more humane and caring.

This is a society that frowns upon those who rape and abuse women and children, a society that scorns at corruption and unfettered greed, a society that cares for and protects the weak, a society that encourages ethical and honest behaviour.

As South Africans we have, within us, a deep sense of morality that has made it possible for our country weather the worst of storms. It is this sense of morality that has allowed us to bring to a peaceful end that part of our history characterised by violent conflict, intolerance and a complete disregard for human rights and dignity.

As we approach the end of the first decade of liberation, we must summon this sense of morality in order to defend the gains of our democracy.

We must be reminded that, the campaign for moral regeneration is central to the social transformation agenda as well as the effort to broaden access to a better life for all.

As the provincial government we are firmly behind the Moral Regeneration Movement. We are aware of the problems that have besieged efforts to launch this movement in our province.

We wish to take this opportunity to make a pledge that we will do everything in our power to ensure that the Moral Regeneration Movement in our province gathers momentum.

Out of this meeting a renewed commitment must emerge that we will together intensify efforts aimed at spreading the positive message of moral renewal.

This meeting must finalise preparations for the Provincial Conference on Moral Regeneration so that we can move with speed towards consolidating the Moral Regeneration Movement in our province.

Let us all join hands in an effort to build a better province, a province of our dreams, a province free from the ills brought about by immoral behaviour.

On behalf of the Honourable Premier, I wish you well in your deliberations.
