The newly appointed MMC for Public Safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, has launched a multifaceted crime and grime busting operation, #ManjeNamhlanje, to restore the rule of law in the Johannesburg inner city.

Manje Namhlanje, which can be loosely translated as ‘now, today’ is designed to ensure the safety of all inner-city communities.

"Every individual should be accountable to enforce the bylaws of the City. Not only am I working towards minimising the rate of crime, but I want a zero-crime rate in Johannesburg," said MMC Tshwaku.

The multidisciplinary operation #ManjeNamhlanje was unveiled at Constitution Hill in Braamfontein over the weekend, with the launch supported by Council Speaker, Colleen Makhubele, the MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Cllr Jack Sekwaila, the MMC for Transport, Cllr Kenny Kunene, Public Safety Head of Department, Tebogo Modiba, Advocate Dali Mpofu, as well as members of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).

Following official proceedings, MMC Tshwaku and JMPD officers went on a walkabout in the CBD to address illegal waste management, illegal street trading, and conduct road safety operations.

"I am delighted by my fellow leader’s commitment to partner with the Public Safety Department in the fight against crime, particularly as part of our efforts to revitalise the Johannesburg inner-city," said MMC Tshwaku.

The MMC hopes Operation #ManjeNamhlanje will be sustainable in fighting lawlessness in Johannesburg.

"Economic growth cannot be achieved in an environment in which criminals act without fear. Restoring the rule of law in Johannesburg requires us to all join hands and say enough is enough. I look forward to collaborating with fellow colleagues to keep our residents safe," he said.

MMC Tshwaku is tasked with creating a conducive environment for economic growth and investment in the City. This in turn will help stimulate job creation.

"Johannesburg has always been known as the City of Hope and Dreams. As a village girl growing up, Johannesburg was the most talked about City because of its beauty and opportunities. I believe that if we work together, we can restore the city to its former glory," said Speaker Makhubele.
