The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, will be joined by the Minister of Energy, Mmamoloko Kubayi; the Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande; and the Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Mzwandile Masina; for the annual Women in Science Awards (WISA) on Thursday evening.
The awards recognise the achievements of prominent women scientists and provide motivation for the increased participation of women scientists in research.
Prizes include fellowships for master's and doctoral students and scholarships in the fields of science, engineering and technology. Cash prizes are awarded to winners in the Distinguished Women Researchers and Distinguished Young Women Researchers categories.
The theme for WISA 2017 is "Women's economic empowerment in the changing world of work" (in line with the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women priority theme for 2017).
Dr Nolulamo Gwagwa will deliver the keynote address. Dr Gwagwa is currently CEO of Lereko Investments, a black-owned investment company, and one of the Lereko Metier Capital Growth Fund principals.
