The Minister of Science and Technology, Mrs Naledi Pandor, will officially launch National Science Week (NSW) at the University of Johannesburg's Soweto Campus on 28 July 2012.

Running from 30 July to 4 August 2012, under the theme "The Role of Science in Economic Development", NSW has many exciting opportunities for learners, students, teachers, academics, parents and the general public.

This annual initiative, led by the Department of Science and Technology, is aimed at highlighting the important role science plays in everyday life and how young people can take advantage of opportunities in these fields and contribute to the country's growth.

More than 80 sites nationwide will be running teacher and learner workshops, open days, public lectures, seminars, career exhibitions, learner outreach activities, and tours of the country's major science facilities.

At the opening, more than 50 organisations will demonstrate the role of science in daily life. The DST has partnered with SABC television and radio stations to bring the launch live to those who are unable to attend.
