Minister Asmal made the announcement at a Parliamentary briefing in Cape Town, this morning.
Transnet chairperson Bongani Khumalo has been appointed to conduct an investigation into the alleged governance and management problems at UDW. He is expected to report to the Minister within 30 days of starting the investigation.
“It is with regret that I am announcing the appointment of an Independent Assessor to investigate and report to me on the apparent governance and management problems at the University of Durban-Westville”.
The Registrar of the University of Cape Town, Hugh Amoore, is to assist Khumalo.
They would make recommendations to the minister on what actions ought to be taken to address the apparent problems at UDW.
“I have not taken this decision lightly and believe that only an independent assessment can establish the truth regarding the situation at the University,” Asmal added.
He said the Council of the University was consulted prior to his decision to appoint the Independent Assessor.
The minister urged all parties at the institution to give their full cooperation to the Independent Assessor. –BuaNews.
