The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) as a union organising within the Criminal Justice Cluster (CJC) will host a Policing Indaba under the theme “Building Ideal Policing and Corrections for the 21st Century.”


With over 200 participants from different fields, the aim of the Indaba is to bring together leading academic scientists, researchers, law enforcement agencies and government departments to exchange and share their experiences, challenges and research results on all aspects of Policing and Law Enforcement.

It also provides a premier interdisciplinary platform for researchers, practitioners and other professionals to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions adopted in the fields of Policing and Law Enforcement. Approaches in crime prevention/law      enforcement/technology to strengthen partnerships between the community and the police and to develop crime prevention strategies will be discussed.


Individual speakers including police department, NPA, private securities, correctional services, home affairs and others will share information on actions their departments have taken and technology they have used to foster community policing and safety.

Speakers will discuss the evolution of police technology, how to apply the vast resources of the Internet and the World Wide Web, law enforcement and technology centers, technology as a force multiplier, organizational change and community policing, crime analysis, crime mapping and tracking, communications interoperability, technology liability considerations, and the detection of concealed weapons.


Furthermore, speakers will discuss the following themes: Crime as is in South Africa: A Losing Battle? Politics of crime Smart Coalition against Crime Ideal Criminal Justice System for South Africa: Challenges and Legacy Role of Private Security in Crime Prevention Gender-Based Violence and Femicide: Shift in Policing and Societal Attitude.
