The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs will tomorrow conclude the Gauteng leg of the public hearings on the Electoral Amendment Bill in Hamanskraal in the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality.

The committee has already conducted public hearings in West Rand District and the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan.

The Bill seeks to introduce amendments to the Electoral Act 73 of 1998 after the Constitutional Court ruled that it was unconstitutional, to the extent that it does not allow independent candidates to contest elections to the National Assembly and provincial legislatures. The court gave Parliament 24 months to remedy the defect.

The committee invites all individuals and interested organisations to come and make inputs on the Bill, to ensure that the final product is reflective of their will and aspirations. The committee is aware that the hearings take place while the risks posed by Covid-19 continue. It has taken consideration of this and has mitigating plans in place to ensure participants’ safety.
