President Mbeki, who is also chairperson of the African Union (AU), said the agreement continued to revive hopes of peace in the Great Lakes Region. The new agreement comes as Africa’s third-largest country celebrated the 43rd anniversary of its independence from Belgium on June 30, 1960.
“The final obstacle to movement towards peace in the DRC has been removed,” said President Mbeki.
“We wish the government and the people of the DRC well in their endeavours to henceforth determine their own future”. The outgoing AU chairperson said the rebuilding of the DRC would ensure stability in the Great Lakes region.
He said that would inevitably contribute to the strength of the AU and the success of its socio-economic recovery plan, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad). President Mbeki will pass on the AU’s chairmanship to his Mozambican counterpart Joaquim Chissano during the forthcoming AU Summit in Maputo this weekend. The DRC government and main rebel groups agreed to share branches of the military and its top posts, paving the way towards the formation of a transitional government. The new transitional government is tasked with overseeing democratic elections to be held after a year. The agreement also allows for government, rebels groups, political parties and civil society representatives to share different ministries in the new transitional government. – BuaNews.
