Pres
ident Thabo Mbeki will meet the African Peer Review Mechanism
(APRM) Country Review Mission in Pretoria on Tuesday, to receive
feedback.
Led by Professor Adebayo Adedeji of Nigeria, the mission has been
in the country for over two weeks now, collecting further
information to compile a response to the Country Self-Assessment
Report.
The mission received the self-assessment report early this month in
a ceremony attended by the President.
This is part of the APRM process aimed at promoting good governance
in Africa through the adoption of laws, policies and practices that
will lead to political stability, economic growth, sustainable
development and economic integration on the continent.
The process is a voluntary self-monitoring tool of the African
Union (AU). South Africa is one of 23 African countries that have
signed to be peer reviewed.
This encourages people to reflect on their national programmes and
challenges and find ways of working together to achieve political
stability, high economic growth and sustainable development South
Africa's review process has been led by Public Service and
Administration Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi as the
chairperson of the APRM Governing Council.
During the mission's visit in the country, they consulted with
government departments, parliamentarians, political parties and
other institutions such as the Reserve Bank, Chamber of Commerce,
Johannesburg Stock Exchange, labour unions and faith-based
organisations.
As part of widespread consultations, they also met representatives
of trade unions, business, youth and people with disabilities,
women and faith-based organisations. - BuaNews
