Pres
ident Thabo Mbeki departed for Washington yesterday, for
bilateral talks with US President George W Bush, ahead of the G8
Summit to be held in Scotland in July.
Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will accompany
President Mbeki.
Foreign affairs spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa, Mbeki has been
consulting various leaders of the G8 with a view to ensure
practical outcomes for Africa and the South during the G8
Summit.
"There is a convergence of views between both President Mbeki and
President Bush regarding the need for practical outcomes," said
Mamoepa.
Mamoepa said the two leaders would also discuss among others,
conflict resolution and peacekeeping in Africa, the G-8 Africa
Plan, African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), Millennium
Challenge Account and Overseas Development Aid (ODA) to
Africa.
South Africa and other countries such as Algeria, Ghana, Nigeria,
Senegal and Uganda are expected to participate in the Africa
Outreach during the G-8 Summit.
"The visit to Washington will also provide an excellent opportunity
for the two leaders to consolidate and strengthen already existing
strategic bilateral and economic relations between both countries,"
he said. According to him, South Africa's exports to the US
increased from $4 888-million in 2003 to $5 926-million last year,
while imports from that country increased from $2 698-million to $2
977-million during the same period. - BuaNews
