Pres
ident Thabo Mbeki, together with his Mozambican counterpart
Joaquim Chissano will co-chair the SA-Mozambique Heads of State
Economic Bilateral meeting in Pemba, Mozambique, next week.
Briefing the media in Pretoria on Thursady, Foreign Affairs Deputy
Minister Aziz Pahad said the meeting would bring together all
economic ministers of the two countries.
He said the meeting was important to South Africa because
Mozambique was one of the fastest growing economies in the Southern
African Development Community (SADC) region and South Africa's
largest trading partner in the SADC region.
He also said South Africa was the second largest investor in
Mozambique worldwide.
“An estimated 250 South African companies are currently
operational in Mozambique,” said the deputy minister, adding
that the cellular phone giant Vodacom, was now operating in
Mozambique.
Pahad added that the meeting was important because the Industrial
Development Corporation (IDC) was spending an estimated R20-billion
in the Zambezi valley, where it was helping to revamp the railway
system and a major port.
Other development projects the IDC was involved in included in the
fields of mineral beneficiation, agriculture, tourism, chemicals,
forestry and energy.
The two countries will also discuss issues of investment, labour,
migration, the South African Natural Gas Pipeline Project and the
Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, amongst others. – BuaNews.
