Speaking in Pretoria today during the reception of letters of credence, President Mbeki said the two countries had an important role to play in the international community.
He said South Africa was pleased that the two had resumed talks. Indian and Pakistan officials began a three-day meeting in Islamabad, yesterday - the first formal talks between the two nuclear rivals in more than two years, on a range of disputes, including Kashmir. So far the two South Asian countries have fought two of their three wars over the disputed Kashmir. "We had thought for a long time, that the resolution of these matters between these two countries who are very closely linked by history and stable relations between the two countries would be of benefit to them and also the whole world," he said.
He added that he was pleased by the fact that the Indian cricket team was touring Pakistan, which was a good sign. Meanwhile, the President is due to receive the letters of credence from Heads of Mission (Designate) of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Botswana, Union of Myanmar, Republic of Mali and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. –BuaNews.
