A story is told about the Nobel prize winning nuclear physicist Hans Bethe, who fled to the United States from Nazi Germany prior to World War II. Bethe won the 1967 Nobel Prize for demonstrating quantitatively that the energy radiated by stars had its origins in nuclear reactions within the stellar interior.
He was walking hand in hand one clear starry evening with the woman who was later to become his wife. Some time earlier that day he had completed the calculations confirming nucleosynthesis as the mechanism behind the power that drives the stars. His girlfriend said to him:
