Archbishop Desmond Tutu danced his way onto the stage at the 2010 FIFA World Cup opening concert in Johannesburg on Thursday before sending a cheering thank you to former President Nelson Mandela.

Tutu, who was dressed in a yellow Bafana Bafana jumper, told the crowd that it was Mandela who had made the tournament possible for South Africa.

"Friends before I tell you who would be in the final," Tutu said with his signature giggle, "I think we have to pay a wonderful tribute to the man we all owe this to, if we make enough noise he will hear us."

Tutu then shouted "Halala Nelson Mandela " and "Viva Madiba" to a deafening cheer from the crowd.

"Every single one of you... we are all Africans. We want to say to the world - Thank you for helping this caterpillar to become a beautiful butterfly."
