A spokesperson for the opposition People's Progressive Movement (PPM), Jimmy Mpatsa, said Malewezi had decided to join the party because "it suits well with his integrity".
Mpatsa said Malewezi formally announced he was joining the PPM at the party's convention on Thursday night in the administrative capital Lilongwe and said he intended to stand for the post of vice president during the party's elections for top posts scheduled for yesterday.
Malewezi announced on January 1 that he had resigned from the United Democratic Front (UDF) but would retire as vice president after general elections in May this year.
He was last year elected deputy chairperson of the UDF, the party of President Bakili Muluzi.
Malewezi, 60, was first appointed by Muluzi as vice president soon after the southern African country's first multi-party elections in 1994. – Sapa-AFP.
