The number of women who visit City of Cape Town clinics for their maternal and reproductive health needs has dropped slightly year-on-year. The City’s Health Department is urging women to make their health a priority during August. Read more below:

Maternal health visits dropped from 72 441 during 2020/21, to 68 972 during 2021/22.

For the same period, reproductive health visits dropped from 909 742 to 880 580.

‘This is a decrease of less than 5%, but I want to encourage women to continue with regular health visits and checks. The biggest drop in antenatal visits occurred after 20 weeks and this could be because women consider this period as being out of the danger zone. It is important that women attend for their first antenatal care visit as soon as they find out they are pregnant, preferably before they are 14 weeks and to continue with clinic visits throughout their pregnancy. This will not only ensure that the baby is growing well but also that the mom-to-be is in good health,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.

Reproductive health visits dropped by 3,2%.

‘Making healthy choices include keeping up with clinic visits. A woman's reproductive system is delicate and complex and it is important to do all you can to avoid long-term health problems. Taking care of yourself can help protect you and your loved ones,’ said Councillor van der Ross.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among South African women. It can be successfully treated if detected in the early stages, so it is important that women are aware of symptoms and what is normal for their bodies.

City clinics offer three free pap smears to all women between 30 and 58 years at 10-year intervals and at three-year intervals for HIV-positive women.

‘Our clinics offer a number of free services to all women, including screening for cervical and breast cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, sexually transmitted infections, TB and HIV testing. I want to encourage women to visit their nearest clinic and speak to our nurses who can advise and address any health concerns they may have,’ said Councillor van der Ross.

A partnership to commemorate Women’s Health month will take place on 12 August in Strand.

The event, initiated by City Health, will focus on cervical cancer and gender-based violence.

Guest speakers include representatives from CANSA and the South African Police Service to help create awareness of these important issues affecting women.
