At his age, one would expect former president Nelson Mandela to be spending most of the times narrating folklore stories to grandchildren, yet he is globetrotting, trying effortlessly to improve the lives of the suffering lot.

But, today is the day he gets to spend with his family.

The world’s famous pensioner is turning 85-years-old and he will celebrate by enjoying quality time with those close to him, his family.

However, main celebrations will see the world’s cream of the crop converge at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg tomorrow, rejoicing with the country’s first democratically elected President.

Yesterday, President Thabo Mbeki wished Madiba a happy day, saying the former president would not be celebrating his big day alone.

“I am very pleased that the whole country will be joining him…tomorrow will be a national day of celebration,” he said.

Since he retired in 1999, Mandela has embarked on a fundraising mission aimed at channelling funds towards the building of schools and clinics.

Today not only does Mandela celebrate his birthday, he also celebrates his fifth wedding anniversary with wife Graca Machel.
