Spokesperson for the German Embassy in Pretoria Clemens Kroll said yesterday that no reason had been given for the cancellation.
"We are not going to comment. With a person of Mandela's stature we don't feel entitled to comment," he said.
Kroll would not say how long ago the meeting was arranged or when it was cancelled.
He said that Schroeder would still meet with officials from the Nelson Mandela Foundation tomorrow.
"It is an opportunity for the Chancellor to become acquainted with the activities of the Nelson Mandela Foundation," he said.
However, an official at the Nelson Mandela Foundation – who could not be named - was quick to point out that Mandela was still on holiday in Mauritius with his family.
Speculation about Mandela's health has been rife since he failed to attend the launch of the African National Congress's election campaign two weeks ago in Durban. The foundation has consistently denied that Mandela was ill and said that he was simply on holiday.
Mandela was South Africa's first democratically elected president.
He served from 1994 until 1999 when he retired. – Sapa.
