Aid workers want $36.5 million to help Madagascar, which has suffered two cyclones this year and faces a strong chance of further storms, the United Nations said on Monday.

Between them cyclones Fame and Ivan have killed at least 96 people, left a further 148,000 without shelter, and damaged more than 225,000 hectares of agricultural land.

Non-profit organisations, the Red Cross, International Organisation for Migration, and the United Nations still have $30 million to raise of their $36.5 million needed to help the victims of cyclones, rain, and winds.

"The requirements are equivalent to $125 per affected person," the document said, adding a total 239,000 people had been hit.

The world's fourth largest island and its largest producer of vanilla, Madagascar is ranked 143 out of 177 on the United Nation's Human Development Index in 2007, with an estimated 85 percent of the 20 million population were living on less than $2 per day in 2005, according to official data.
