Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota is in a stable condition after suffering from a “mild” heart attack on Wednesday night, the governement news service, BuaNews, reported yesterday.

Lekota was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Gatesville Medical Centre in Cape Town on Thursday morning.

Defence spokesperson Sam Mkhwanazi told BuaNews on Friday that Lekota was “out of danger” and would remain in hospital for an unspecified period.

“We have not yet received an official confirmation from the doctors as to what could be the problem or the exact cause for his hospitalisation,” said Mkhwanazi.

“The doctors told us that he is out of danger and that he is responding very well to treatment. For now, he will remain under observation for some time,” he said.

Lekota yesterday received visitors, including President Thabo Mbeki, who wished him a speedy recovery. - BuaNews
