Bowman Gilfillan Africa Group is continuing with its expansion in Africa with the opening of two new offices in Tanzania and Uganda, bringing the total number of lawyers across the group to 64.

Jonathan Lang, who heads up the Bowman Gilfillan Africa Group, reveals that the group is now expanding further with two new offices in:

  • Kampala, Uganda – A.F. Mpanga
  • Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - East African Law Chambers

The BowmanGilfillan Africa Group was established in 2004 by leading South African law firm Bowman Gilfillan. In 2008, the Group opened an office in Nairobi, through an association with Coulson Harney.

Lang, says that the Kenyan office has been “enormously successful”, growing from the original two partners to seven partners and 17 other fee earners. “Our Nairobi office advises major corporations, financial institutions and the Government of Kenya on a wide range of matters and is widely regarded as a leading practice in Kenya and the East African region. The addition of offices in the other two major economies in the East African Community will complement our Kenyan operations very well".

With Tanzania and Uganda, the group now has a presence in four important economies in Africa – Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda – and has a “best friends” relationship with leading Nigerian firm, Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie. Lang says that the group intends to grow its presence and reach in Africa over the short- to medium-term.

Lang says that the Bowman Gilfillan Africa Group provides top-end legal services to domestic and international clients across Africa. The Bowman Gilfillan Africa Group advises corporations, financial institutions, governments and state owned enterprises. Lang points out that the group operates as onefirm and that the offices frequently work together on larger transactions and projects across Africa.

He pinpoints the core practice areas of the group as:

  • mergers and acquisitions
  • banking and finance
  • infrastructure
  • energy and power
  • resources and mining
  • capital markets
  • competition and anti-trust
  • private equity
  • employment
  • litigation
  • tax
  • maritime and transport.
