The DA has called on KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Social Development MEC, Nonhlanhla Khoza to urgently engage with Treasury on a way forward when it comes to ongoing funding issues facing the province’s Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs).
The appeal was made during a KZN Legislature Sitting held in Ugu today. It comes after reports - and complaints directly to the DA - that NPOs in the province are still experiencing financial issues including late subsidy payments by KZN’s Department of Social Development (DSD).
This while the ANC-run department, under MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza continues to claim that all NPOs have received the funding.
The DA is extremely concerned by this situation. It is clear that it must be resolved in order for NPOs to function effectively and continue delivering valuable services to communities in need.
The DSD has allowed this matter to drag on for months without any real engagement with affected NPOs. The result is that it has now escalated to the point where NPOs have started a petition, aimed at pressuring DSD into paying them on time.
The DA expects the MEC to engage with Treasury in a bid to resolve her department’s ongoing financial issues. Either DSD does not have enough money - or it simply can’t manage it properly. We also expect the MEC to provide urgent feedback on this to affected NGOs.
When the people of KZN go to the polls in 2024 they will have the opportunity to rescue our province from an uncaring and incompetent government.
