Concerns about security in Samawa have mounted following a grenade attack on Monday that resulted in the death of a Dutch soldier.
Koizumi hopes to seek understanding of the Japanese troops' humanitarian activity in Iraq and cooperation for securing their safety, Jiji said.
Japan has sent 550 ground troops to Samawa to provide humanitarian assistance such as providing clean water and repairing roads and schools.
