The two Presidents will meet at the Union Buildings in Pretoria today.
Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Tshwane Executive Mayor Father Smangaliso Mkhatshwa and Chief Protocol Ambassador Billy Modise received President Kibaki and his delegation, yesterday afternoon.
President Kibaki is the first Kenyan head of state to visit South Africa.
A meeting between Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and her Kenyan equal Stephen Musyoka preceded President Kibaki’s arrival.
Talks between Kibaki and President Mbeki are expected to focus on political, economic and peace processes, global terrorism and trade relations.
Kenya is South Africa’s largest trading partner on the continent beyond the Southern African Development Community. (SADC). South African exports to Kenya for last year reached R2,3-billion. The visit is seen as significant because Kenya is considered the powerhouse of the East Africa Region. Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Aziz Pahad last week said South Africa was willing to assist countries that were making an effort to develop themselves.
“South Africa being a developed economic and political power has to go the extra mile to help consolidate countries that are making a genuine attempt to become part of what we call ‘the new thinking’ on our continent,” he said, at the time. –BuaNews.
