By announcing Danny Jordaan as the African National Congress (ANC) mayoral candidate for Nelson Mandela Bay, the ruling party has shown they were not serious about creating jobs or delivering better services, the DA said on Sunday.

DA mayoral candidate Athol Trollip said in a statement six months after ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa promised to make public the Bay’s mayoral candidate, "the DA can reveal that the ANC has chosen to field a candidate who has let down the people of Nelson Mandela Bay since coming into office a year ago".

"The ANC has revealed that they are not serious about creating jobs, stopping corruption or delivering better services, by announcing the 'broken promises mayor', Danny Jordaan, as their mayoral candidate for Nelson Mandela Bay."

Trollip said changing ANC mayors has not changed the situation of the people.

The ANC announced its list of mayor for the different metros on Saturday night with Jordaan confirmed as the candidate for NMB.

Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau retain his seat while deputy minister of trade and industry Mzwandile Masina got the notch over Mondli Gungubele in Ekurhueni.

Tshwane, another metro that the DA was trying to wrestle away from ANC control, remains without a candidate for now. The party said the Regional Executive Committee submitted three names to the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC), but the PEC was not convinced with the names submitted.

Trollip maintained that only the DA had a diverse and capable team of candidates ready to lead the bay and take it forward.

“When in government, we will work to improve service delivery, stop corruption and create jobs, because the time of broken promises is over,” he said.
