Source: New National Party Title: Carol Johnson: Who is the presidential candidate?
The DA’s propoganda that it will get between 25% and 30% of the vote is creating confusion with the voting public. According to the DA’s explanation of how they get to these figures, the support of its coalition partners is added to the DA’s already inflated figure.
The question now arises who are the DA’s other coalition partners. We know about the IFP and its leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi. Tony Leon must spell out who his partners are so that the voting public is informed.
When the voting public knows who these coalition partners are the next and probably more important question is who is the coalition’s presidential candidate: is it Mr Leon or Minister Buthelezi? If the DA’s whining for a debate between Mr Leon and Pres Mbeki is anything to go by, it will appear that Mr Leon has put himself up as the coalition’s presidential candidate.
And Mr Leon is preaching that this coalition is the alternative government, therefore it is in the national interest to know who the coalition’s presidential candidate is.
Mr Leon calls for a consolidation of the opposition. Does this mean that the DA and IFP and the other partners will merge after the election to form one party? Yet again the coalition will have to tell South African voters now who will lead this new party.
