The Japanese government's assistance towards improving rural water supply in the Eastern Cape will rise to R71-million spent on water pipes supplied and 12 new wells drilled.

Embassy spokesperson Takuya Nemoto said that an official completion ceremony at Umtata yesterday would announce an additional R37-million to be spent on a project that had already assisted 13 communities.

Eight more communities would benefit from the additional funding, which brought the total amount to R71-million, after similar water facilities had been built.

"It is expected that an additional 23 000 people living in the Eastern Cape will obtain access to safe water, which will in turn ensure healthier living conditions and reduce risk of disease," said Nemoto.

"The project is a symbol of the friendly and co-operative relations between the peoples of Japan and South Africa," he said. – Sapa.
