Jacob Zuma to visit Spain and Netherlands

Deputy President Jacob Zuma will pay an official visit to the Netherlands and Spain from September 21 to 25, 2003.

Zuma's delegation to the Netherlands includes the Minister of Justice, Penuell Maduna and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aziz Pahad. To Spain, he will be accompanied by the Minister of Intelligence Services Lindiwe Sisulu, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Lindiwe Hendricks and Deputy Minister Pahad.

South Africa is playing a key and active role in conflict resolution, management and prevention, arbitration as well as peacekeeping in the continent.

In this context, the Deputy President and delegation will from September 22 to 23, interact with legal multilateral institutions including the Permanent Court of Arbitration, International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and the Hague Convention on International Private Law. The Deputy President will also use the opportunity to promote trade relations and will address a luncheon of the South Africa-Netherlands Chamber of Commerce.

Zuma will also visit Madrid, Spain, from September 24 to 25.

The visit will focus on deepening economic and political ties between the two countries.

Zuma is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with the First Deputy Prime Minister, Rodrigo Rato and discuss among others, issues surrounding:

- Current status of and prospects for further expansion of bilateral relations and steps to expand economic ties;

- Recent developments regarding Nepad and African Union;

- Conflict resolution and peacekeeping within the continent.

In promoting trade relations and investments to the country, the Deputy President will interact with captains of Spanish industry and commerce at a luncheon hosted by the Madrid Chamber of Commerce. Spain is one of South Africa's major trading partners.

For the period 1999-2002, Spain invested R2,020-billion in South Africa, and was the fourth largest new investor to South Africa for 2002.

To promote Nepad, the Deputy President will address a Nepad conference hosted by prestigious Spanish think tank, the Real Elcano Institute.
