Delegates at Ivory Coast peace talks being held near Paris have agreed that President Laurent Gbagbo should remain in power with an enlarged government open to all parties, a source close to the talks told AFP early Friday.

"All the parties have signed the agreement. It foresees President Gbagbo retaining power and the formation of a government open to all," the source said.

Gbagbo's current mandate last until 2005. An agreement on his status is seen as a requisite for all other strands of a peace deal to end the four-month war in the west African nation.

Since a rebellion was launched last September, the rebels had been calling for Gbagbo's removal and fresh elections.

An enlarged government should be led by a consensus prime minister, the source said.

Ivorian Prime Minister Pascal Affi N'Guessan has been heading a government delegation for the round-table peace talks with three rebel movements and the political opposition at a rugby training centre in the town of Marcoussis in the southern Paris suburbs.

The agreement was to be presented later in the day by talks coordinator Pierre Mazeaud to French President Jacques Chirac who will meet Gbagbo in Paris in the afternoon.

Gbagbo arrived in Paris on Thursday for a weekend summit of African leaders convened to ratify the hoped-for accord.
