Israel is calling back a "limited number" of troops from south Lebanon after a United Nations-mandated cease-fire went into effect earlier today, the Israel Defense Forces said.

The soldiers are being pulled out of Lebanon because they aren't needed after the cease-fire took effect at 8:00 a.m. local time today, an IDF spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity, said by telephone. He said remaining forces would act according to the terms of the cease-fire and undertake "defensive" operations only.

Security Council Resolution 1701, approved unanimously on Aug. 11, demands an end to more than a month of fighting between Israel and the Muslim Shiite group Hezbollah. It calls for the withdrawal of Israeli troops after combined UN and Lebanese forces move into southern Lebanon.
