Dele gates from the main Shiite Muslim movement that opposed Saddam Hussein were due for talks here Monday with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher, officials said Sunday.

The delegation from the Iran-based Supreme Assembly of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SAIRI) will be headed by Ibrahim Hammudi, according to an Egyptian official who asked not to be named.

Maher held talks here Saturday with Barham Saleh, a leading official from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in northern Iraq, who has called for creating a united, federal and democratic Iraq.

Egypt's contacts with different components of the former Iraqi opposition come "in the context of Cairo's concern to coordinate with all Iraqi groups during this critical period for Iraq," the official said - Sapa-AFP
