Massoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), one of the two main Kurdish factions, said five former Iraqi opposition groups met in Baghdad late Wednesday as Iraq's new political process comes to life.
"We discussed the steps needed to fill the political, administrative and security vacuum," he told AFP. "The meetings will continue until we reach results." A US-led conference on Monday brought together around 250 delegates who agreed on a one-month timetable to form an interim government although it was not clear when the United States would hand over power to it.
Barzani's opposite number from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Jalal Talabani, attended Wednesday's meeting along with Ahmed Chalabi, leader of the Iraqi National Congress (INC) who has backing from parts of the US government.
Also on hand were Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, deputy head of the Supreme Assembly of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SAIRI), and Iyad Allawi, leader of the Iraqi National Accord Movement.
"Everything is happening in coordination with the Americans," Barzani said. "Everything we agree upon should be in coordination with the coalition." The US administration running post-war Iraq has not indicated when it plans to hand over authority to any newly-formed Iraqi government - Sapa-AFP
