The National Assembly's home affairs committee has urged the department to speed up the documentation process for asylum seekers and refugees. Recent events surrounding the death of Zimbabwean refugee Adonis Musati has highlighted the plight of refugees and asylum seekers in South Africa, committee chairman Patrick Chauke said on Friday.

Musati, 24, reportedly died of hunger on November 2, just a few metres away from the Cape Town Harbour Refugee Centre.

The committee's aim was to oversee and monitor the work of the home affairs department and hold them accountable, Chauke said. "Today, the world observes International Day for Tolerance which generates public awareness around intolerance of asylum seekers and refugees, and as well as emphasising the dangers of intolerance."

Warning against intolerance towards refugees and asylum seekers, Chauke said the committee was committed to their integration into society.

Speeding up the documentation process for asylum seekers and refugees would help this along. "This is when they will be able to access all the benefits that the state provides, and they will be able to exercise their own rights of
employment," he said.

The committee wanted refugees to be given opportunities that would enable them to have a better life. "We wish to extend this day of tolerance and goodwill to all those who leave their country in search of better opportunities, in the hope that one day they will enjoy a better life, Chauke said.
