I have been asked by the Buthelezi family to respond to allegations in today's Isolezwe that it is the family's wish to see Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi retire from active politics forthwith.

The Buthelezi family would like to categorically state that this is not the view of the entire family, and they wish to firmly disassociate themselves from such baseless statements.

The comments reported in today's paper, reflect only the view of one family member, expressed in her individual capacity. Princess Phumzile has herself emphatically stated that at no stage did she suggest to Isolezwe that she was making a statement on behalf of the family. In fact, she says that there is a lot she said that was left out, which suggests that her comments were selectively reported. This is grossly irresponsible and mischievous.

The discussion on Prince Buthelezi's future has been in the public domain for many years. It is unfortunate that the media has often tried to predict, preempt and even predetermine the future. The final decision rests with Prince Buthelezi, the family and the Party.

The Buthelezi family also rejects with contempt all speculation around the Prince's health. When he was hospitalized with fatigue on 9 September, a full statement was released to the media with all the relevant details. He was released from hospital within a week and was ordered by his doctors not to resume his full schedule of duties immediately, as is standard procedure during recovery.

The family wishes to register their unwavering support for Prince Buthelezi's calling to serve the nation.

Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi is in good health, his energy is restored and he is eager to resume his many duties with the same passion and vigour for which he is known and respected.
