The IFP has welcomed the positive picture that has emerged from the
release of the 2009/2010 crime stats, presented by the Minister of
Police Mr. Nathi Mthwethwa in Pretoria today, but has urged Government
to intensify its efforts to fight crime even further.
"We welcome the downward trend in all of the major crimes. It shows that
the SAPS' immense efforts to combat crime, and its efforts to keep South
Africa a safe place for both locals and tourists, have paid off. The IFP
believes that special commendation must go to the SAPS for the
significant decrease in South Africa's murder rate," said Velaphi
Ndlovu, IFP Spokesperson on Police today.
Ndlovu said that the IFP was however, concerned by what seems to be a
steady upward trend in burglaries at homes and business premises.
"The increase in crimes such as residential and business burglaries and
the increase of crimes under the influence of drugs and alcohol clearly
need special attention from law enforcement agencies. The SAPS and other
stakeholders must develop specific strategies to address these types of
crimes, so that we are able to see a significant drop in these
statistics next year," said Ndlovu.
Ndlovu said that during the World Cup, the SAPS proved that it could
keep the streets of South Africa safe, and now is the time to build on
these successes.
"While the latest crime statistics have given South Africans reason to
be cautiously optimistic, the fact remains that South Africa is still
ranked as one of the countries with the highest crime rates. We must
therefore, once more increase our efforts to fight crime, which is not
only the responsibility of the SAPS but the broader South African
community at large. With the SAPS' bolstered numbers and its experience
from the successfully hosting of the World Cup, we hope to see the crime
statistics decreasing even further next year," added Ndlovu.
