The Inkatha Freedom Party today called for the immediate resignation of the national police commissioner General Bheki Cele, following the Public
Protector's release of its report, which found Cele guilty of improper
conduct and maladministration.

"There should be no further discussion on this matter. Cele acted unlawfully
and improperly and should therefore resign or be asked to vacate his
position immediately," said Velaphi Ndlovu MP, the IFP's spokesperson on
police today.

Ndlovu said that if President Zuma did not act against General Cele his
pledges to tackle corruption in South Africa would ring hollow.

"Again, during his State of the Nation address, President Zuma reconfirmed
his administration's pledge to work harder to root out all forms of
corruption and maladministration. The President cannot say on one hand that
he is serious about fighting corruption, if on the other hand, once one of
his close cronies are caught, he simply turns a blind eye," said Ndlovu.

Ndlovu said that the latest incident is another severe blow for the
reputation and credibility of the police. "The SAPS suffered a great deal of
damage to its reputation as a result of the corruption conviction of former
South African police chief and Interpol head Jackie Selebi. Now it
transpires that his successor is just as rotten. At the very minimum, to
preserve the credibility of the SAPS, and to restore its public and
international image, Cele must go."
