The IFP has welcomed the arrests of six policemen, accused of a string
of serious crimes, in KwaZulu Natal yesterday.
The members of the SAPS had been arrested in connection with crimes
ranging from sexual assault, assault with intent to cause grievous
bodily harm, and house breaking.
"Crime and corruption within the SAPS have become endemic. The IFP
therefore welcome these arrests as a sign that the Independent Police
Investigative Directorate (IPID) is taking their task of ridding the
police of all its criminal elements seriously," said Mr Velaphi Ndlovu
MP, the IFP's spokesperson on police.
Ndlovu said that because crime is rife within the SAPS, South Africans
do not trust the police, the very people who are meant to protect them.
"The IFP pledges its support to the IPID as it strives to rebuild the
image of the SAPS. While these arrests are a step in the right
direction, much more will have to be done to restore the credibility
of the SAPS in the eyes of ordinary South Africans," added Ndlovu.
