The Inkatha Freedom Party in KwaZulu Natal is gravely concerned at the state of Fort Napier Mortuary.
During a portfolio visit, IFP KZN Shadow MEC for Health, Dr Usha Roopnarain noticed that the relatively new facility was in a sad and appalling state.
“Upon inspection during our Portfolio Committee visit, there was a revolting stench from the decomposition, there were huge maintenance problems, ranging from blocked hose pipes and filters. The conditions were unhygienic, floors were blood stained, even worse were 125 unclaimed bodies from December 2011. There was also some major staff problems such as lack of job descriptions showed clearly that the mortuary is clustered with problems,” said Honourable Dr Usha Roopnarain, Shadow MEC for Health.
In a motion, in today’s Legislature sitting, the IFP has called upon the MEC of Health, Dr Sbongiseni Dhlomo’s intervention as this is a matter of urgency. The IFP is also calling on the Provincial Department of Health to take priority of the Province’s mortuaries.
