THE Inkatha Freedom Party, Shadow MEC for Health, Dr Usha Roopnarain in KwaZulu Natal today said that the IFP is gravely concerned about horrifying reports of mosquitos, cockroaches and rodent infestation at King Edward VIII Hospital, Durban.
"These findings are truly revolting. How can patients be safe amid cockroaches, mosquitos and rats? If we are serious about infection control we need to be serious about dealing with these pests, this is unacceptable and clearly will become a health hazard," said Roopnarain.
"The IFP is calling for the MEC's immediate intervention on this intolerable conduct of the hospital. The Hospital management must provide a full explanation on this disgraceful anomaly," added Roopnarain
"The MEC of Health, Dr Sbongiseni Dhlomo, should not only investigate this apparent irregularity for a Health facility but someone must be held accountable, if we are serious about standards of infection control and health hazards. There needs to be clear standards on the levels of hygiene and this must be translated into action. These levels must be brought to life and cannot be simply on paper," Roopnarain said.
"The IFP views this in a serious light, to be told that mosquitos are feeding on new born babies, intolerable." she concluded.
