The IFP has welcomed the findings released today in the much
anticipated Press Freedom Commission Report on press regulation in
South Africa.

The IFP said the recommendations will go a long way towards
strengthening South Africa's free press and by extension, its
fledgling democracy.

"We are particularly pleased to note that our recommendation on the
need to create a unique South African regulatory system in the form of
an independent co-regulation system, was taken on board. This is a
unique type of regulation, where the public will hold the majority
power in adjudicating complaints. We believe this will go a long way
in improving the quality of journalism in our country," said Joshua
Mazibuko MPL, the IFP's Deputy National Spokesperson.

Mazibuko said that there were other notable improvements as well.

"The IFP had stressed that the right of reply should be more
rigorously enforced. We are therefore pleased to note that the new
recommendations will strengthen this process. We are also pleased with
the recommendation that specific space fines, where the Ombudsman will
be able to declare whether a correction, apology or right to reply
must be on a specific page and occupy a certain amount of space, will
be introduced. This is a new form of monetary punishment which is
welcomed," concluded Mazibuko.
