The IFP has condemned in the strongest terms the attacks perpetrated by ANC members on the three candidates who are standing as independents in the upcoming local government elections in Willowfontein, the home of KZN Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize.
“We call on the Independent Electoral Commission as well as the KZN Legislature’s multi-party delegation to attend to these incidents with the urgency they deserve,” said IFP KZN Provincial Chairperson Mntomuhle Khawula MPL.
The IFP has alleged that the IEC, the KZN Legislature multi-party delegation and the SAPS have so far only focused on the election ‘hotspots’ that involve the opposition parties in general and the IFP in particular.
“It is time for a non-political approach to all incidents of intimidation and intolerance ahead of the local government elections regardless of the political allegiance of their perpetrators,” said Khawula.
The IFP does not believe the Willowfontein incidents are matters that can be left to the SAPS alone.
“The motivation behind the attacks was blatantly political and these incidents must be treated in that light by the institutions which have been set up to combat political intolerance,” said Khawula.
