The IFP has called for urgent investigation into claims of irregular housing
allocation at the N2 Gateway Housing Project in the Western Cape.
IFP Spokesperson on Human Settlements, Mr Petros Sithole MP, said, "Housing
Development Agency officials and the community leaders must be investigated
in order to obtain clarity on just how many RDP houses have been sold to
people who were not on the housing list. Residents of Joe Slovo informal
settlement have waited a long time for housing, and corruption is now
poisoning the handover and allocation process."
HDA officials are currently withholding the list of names from the
residents, who wanted to conduct their own investigation into this
allocation debacle. This has raised serious issues of mistrust between the
community and officials, and there are now widespread suspicions of
collusion within the leadership of the HDA.
"The IFP remains extremely concerned about the lack of proper and formal
housing for citizens who live in shacks in places like Khayelitsha,
Phillipi, Cape Flats as well as all other informal settlements around the
country," said Sithole.
The IFP calls on the Department of Human Settlements to work closely with
provincial departments in speeding up the process of providing proper
housing to the people. The Department must also strive to fight all forms of
corruption in its drive to house our people. Anyone found guilty of
collusive, irregular and related criminal activities must be prosecuted to
the fullest extent of the law.
